Terms and Conditions

  1. Doglaw SOS is a trading name of Cooper & Co Solicitors of 19 Palace Street, Canterbury, Kent, CT1 2DZ. Cooper & Co Solicitors is regulated and authorised by the Solicitors Regulation Authority.  SRA 258139
  2. Neither Cooper & Co Solicitors nor Doglaw SOS are an insurance company and nor do they provide insurance.
  3. Membership of Doglaw SOS is for 12 months and costs:-
    1. £69 (incl VAT) for individual membership (covers 1 adult and all the dogs they own or keep), or
    2. £99 (incl VAT) for household membership (covers 2 adults at the same address and all the dogs they own or keep)
  4. We reserve the right to decline your request to join or renew your membership. 
  5. You get the benefits specified for 12 months from the date we send our confirmation letter (or email) to you (“the commencement date”). 
  6. You must:-
    • reside in England & Wales, and
    • be an individual (membership is not available to organisations), and
    • be at least 18 years old 
  7. The payment in clause 3 is non-refundable unless:-
    • we decline your request to join or renew, in which case a full refund will be made as soon as possible, or
    • you cancel within 14 days of the commencement date, in which case payment for any of the benefits you have received during that period will be deducted from the refund 
  8. You cannot transfer any of the benefits of membership of Doglaw SOS to someone else.  Membership benefits are provided solely for the personal benefit of the member and have no cash value.
  9. We may amend these terms and conditions from time to time by giving you at least 30 days’ notice.  No amendment will affect benefits already provided before the change takes effect.

Additional terms and conditions for Doglaw telephone advice

  1. You only get the benefit of Doglaw telephone advice if the cause or matter initially arises during the period of your membership of Doglaw SOS. 
  2. The advice will be provided by Cooper & Co Solicitors. Although Trevor Cooper is the Principal of Cooper & Co Solicitors we cannot guarantee that he will be the lawyer who will provide the advice.
  3. The advice is a telephone service only. The lines at 01227 20 33 20 are open during normal office hours. 
  4. The advice is available by prior appointment (although in most cases we shall aim for it to be within one working day).
  5. The advice will only be provided for a dog law issue in relation to the law in England & Wales and as specified on the website www.doglaw.co.uk.
  6. The advice sought must be in relation to actual issues not for hypothetical ones. 
  7. For the avoidance of doubt, advice will not be provided on the following matters: business law; planning; defamation; employment; health & safety; taxation; the drafting of terms and conditions; the drafting of pleadings or statements. 
  8. The advice will not be provided if:-
    • there is a conflict of interest (or a potential conflict of interest), or
    • if it is a matter in which we have no expertise 
  9. We will not provide advice to enforcers for matters arising in the course of their employment.
  10. Calls may be recorded for quality assurance purposes.
  11. We have professional indemnity insurance with Travelers Insurance Company Limited. 
  12. If you have a complaint about the advice provided by us please write to Trevor Cooper at 19 Palace Street, Canterbury, Kent, CT1 2DZ. If that fails to resolve your complaint you may bring it to the attention of the Legal Ombudsman at PO Box 6806, Wolverhampton, WV1 6WJ.

Additional terms and conditions for Criminal Defence and Civil Defence

  1. If you are prosecuted in a Magistrates’ Court in criminal proceedings brought against you in England & Wales as specified in clause 23, membership includes access to pro bono criminal defence representation provided by us:-
    • provided that there is no conflict of interest (and/or no potential conflict of interest), and
    • subject to our professional and regulatory obligations
    • This does not include representation at a Police Station
  2. The representation in clause 22 only applies to criminal proceedings brought against you under:-
      1. Section 3 Dangerous Dogs Act 1991
      2. Section 1 of the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1953
      3. Section 80 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 for breaching a Noise Abatement Notice relating to a dog
      4. The Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018 in relation to breaching conditions of a licence for:-
        1. dog breeding,
        2. home boarding,
        3. boarding in kennels, or
        4. dog day care
  1. The date of occurrence of the incident must have happened during the period of your membership of Doglaw SOS. The date of occurrence is the date on which the alleged offence first occurred. 
  2. For the defence of a Doglaw civil case (as defined in Clause 26):-
    • If, in our discretion, we agree to accept instructions to act for you, we will provide you with a discount of 50% off our usual hourly charging rate for casework.  You will still be responsible for payment of the balance of our fees as well as the full amount of all disbursements. 
    • You will not get the 50% discount referred to in clause (a) unless the cause or matter / date of occurrence was during the period of your membership of Doglaw SOS
  3. A Doglaw civil case means defending:-
    • A compensation claim for personal injury
    • A damages claim for damage to property
    • A damages claim for harm to an animal
  4. For either Criminal Defence or Civil Defence:-
    • we may decline to provide or continue representation where, in our professional judgment, the case lacks merit or continued representation would be disproportionate.
    • we will not pay for any fines, penalties, costs, compensation or damages which you may be ordered or required to pay by a court or other authority. 
    • we will not pay for any expert’s fees (nor similar disbursements).
    • for Criminal Defence we will pay for Counsel’s fees as and when required, but for Civil Defence any Counsel’s fees would be payable by you in advance

If that fails to resolve your complaint you may bring it to the attention of the Legal Ombudsman at PO Box 6806, Wolverhampton, WV1 6WJ.

Additional terms for Veterinary advice

29.This members’ benefit is not authorised or regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority.  It is provided by a third party, namely FirstVet, and is subject to their terms and conditions https://firstvet.com/uk

Additional terms for half price seminars & webinars

30.This offer only applies to seminars and webinars booked and paid for during the course of your membership of Doglaw SOS and which are run by Cooper & Co Solicitors or Doglaw Limited.

31.The offer is not combinable with any other offers, promotions or discounts.

32.You cannot make any recording of the presentation.

Additional terms for the Members’ Forum

  1. Membership of Doglaw SOS includes access to the Doglaw SOS Members’ Forum (if one is operated by us from time to time).
  2. Access to the forum is personal to the member and may not be shared with any other person.
  3. We may remove any post or comment and may suspend or terminate a member’s access to the forum if we reasonably believe that they have:-
  • acted abusively towards another member;
  • posted unlawful, defamatory or offensive content;
  • disclosed confidential information; or
  • otherwise breached the rules of the forum.
  1. Any information provided in the forum is for general information only and does not constitute legal, veterinary or other professional advice.
  2. We reserve the right to withdraw, modify or replace the forum at any time on reasonable notice.

Additional terms for the Monthly Community Donation

  1. Every member of Doglaw SOS whose membership is current and fully paid on the date of the draw will automatically be entered into the Monthly Community Donation.
  2. One member will be selected at random each calendar month.
  3. The selected member may nominate a dog rescue organisation, dog welfare charity or similar canine welfare organisation to receive a donation of £100 from us.
  4. The nominated organisation must:
    a. operate for charitable or non-profit purposes;
    b. promote the welfare of dogs;
    c. be based in England & Wales; and
    d. be approved by us, such approval not to be unreasonably withheld.
  5. The selected member must provide details of their nominated organisation within 30 days of being notified of their selection.
  6. If the selected member does not nominate an eligible organisation within 30 days, we may select a suitable dog rescue organisation or dog welfare charity to receive the donation.
  7. The selected member is not entitled to receive any payment, gift, voucher, discount or other personal benefit as a result of being selected.
  8. We may publish the first name and general location of the selected member together with the name of the organisation receiving the donation unless the member requests otherwise.
  9. We reserve the right to amend, suspend or withdraw the Monthly Community Donation at any time by giving members not less than 30 days’ notice.
